Midlands Legionella Control Ltd recently conducted a Legionella risk assessment at a dental practice in Birmingham. The practice had a small domestic water system consisting of a cold-water storage tank, hot water tank, and dental unit waterline system fed by bottles.

The assessment identified potential sources of Legionella growth and exposure, concluding that the risk of Legionella infection was low due to the practice’s effective management procedures. The practice had a Legionella management policy in place that included regular flushing, cleaning, and monitoring of the water systems and a thorough daily dental hygiene routine for their dental unit water lines. Site kept a full and compliant water services logbook which included up-to-date records for all duties recommended in the legionella risk assessment.

The report recommended some additional control measures to further reduce the risk of Legionella growth, such as increasing the frequency of Legionella testing and considering the installation a mains-fed system in the future to reduce the risk of legionella growth from their cold water storage tank. This tank carries a high risk of legionella growth if it is not monitored, the assessment highlights the importance of regular Legionella risk assessments and effective management procedures to prevent the growth of Legionella bacteria and protect the health of employees, patients, and visitors.

Even though the rest of site was found to be low-risk providing the regime in place continues, the legionella risk assessment at a dental practice, or at any building used by the public or rented to a third part, should be conducted at least every years, and should be reviewed whenever there is a change of key personnel, when there is reason to suspect the current regime is not effective, or when there are changes, additions or upgrades to the water systems in place.

This dental practice legionella risk assessment was conducted in Birmingham, although we work all over the Midlands, and the rest of England and Wales.
