Cleaned in accordance with BS EN 806-5:2012, BS 8558:2011 and BS PD 855468:2015. Cold water storage tanks can present a high risk of bacterial growth and regular inspection, sampling, cleaning & disinfection is necessary in order to reduce this risk.

Cold water storage tanks can harbor the growth of legionella bacteria, which causes Legionnaires’ disease, as well as many other harmful bacteria. Such growth can be encouraged and escalated by sediment, scale, stagnation, poor tank design and a lack of use, and a number of other issues.

When do cold water storage tanks need cleaning?

Cold water storage tanks should be inspected 6 monthly, and they may also require UKAS accredited water sampling, according to their use. Cleaning can be required either if conditions are found which may encourage bacterial growth, or, following unsatisfactory UKAS accredited sampling. Cold water storage tanks and all distribution pipework should also be cleaned following any alterations or additions to pipework or the rest of the system.

Cleaning regimes should be clearly identified by legionella risk assessment.
